Gina Arena criticized a judge for releasing a defendant who punched a State Trooper -- after an arrest for driving while intoxicated -- because he claimed he had a college exam the next day.
Cortlandt Town Justice Kimberly Ragazzo released the defendant, who also damaged a wall while in custody, without verifying his story.
"Driving while intoxicated is a serious offense," said Arena, Republican and Conservative Senate candidate in the 42nd District. "Entire families are too often horribly killed by such drivers, and the judge should be more concerned with preventing such tragedies than the defendant's claim of an upcoming college exam."
Arena continued, "The same defendant punched a State Trooper in the face for doing his job. If the judge is serious about putting this young man on a better path in life, some time in jail would give him time to think about his choices."
"Men and women who work in law enforcement, and are assaulted while doing their job, deserve more respect from judges," Arena said. "And people who commit those assaults deserve jail time."
